Whitehall 3’s Jonathan Munson hit a six before being taken out by Heather Hill’s Marcus McNaughton. Whitehall’s Keyshawn Thomas made his presence felt upon arrival at the crease by hitting a six and a four. Tight bowling from Fred Crenshaw, Chimwemwe, Marcus, and Sharon Jacob then put a damper on Whitehall’s scoring rate. Johnathan Simon got the prized wicket of Keyshawn for 18 runs. Whitehall’s Ethan Stubbs added a valuable 6 runs to the teams total, which ended on 51. Masai Wray got 1 wicket. Whitehall 1 vs Heather Hills 2

Whitehall 1 won to toss and put Heather Hills in to bat first. Joshua Agomuoh opened the bowling for Whitehall and only gave up one run in his over. Leah Arrieta bowled next, and Heather Hills’ Meredith Pena got a boundary off Leah’s bowling. The diminutive and talented Ella Zeigler also hit a four in her seven runs. But Leah quickly put an end to Ella’s resistance. With overpowering bowling from the twins, Nathan and Joseph Zacharski, and Ethan Hapeman-Farrell, Heather Hills 2 could only muster a total of 18 runs in their 10 overs. Joseph got 3 wickets, Ethan got two wickets, and Nathan got 1 wicket.

Whitehall 2 vs Bulldogs

It was a sunny cool day, and the kids and parents were eager to get the first match of the season underway. The match was officiated by two of the Washington Cricket League’s veteran umpires, Ram Ragoo and George Klaiber. Tre Johnson and Siril Stephen opened the batting for the Bulldogs. Tre started off his inning with a four and looked like he was headed for a big score, but a low delivery from Whitehall’s Zechariah Mckinney bowled him. Siril was ready to get some runs and smashed two consecutive fours. He then whipped Whitehall’s Jabari Penn for a six, but Jabari had the last word by bowling Siril for a total of 18 runs. Jordan Hughes and Tommy Reimer each scored eight runs including a boundary. Whitehall’s Adam Taifouri and Tyler Forcey each got 1 wicket. Bulldogs ended with a total score on 48 runs in their 10 overs.

Sinaka Aniedobe and Dalila Belkic opened the batting for Whitehall 2. Sinaka hit a four, and Dalila followed suit. Dalila was on fire hitting Bulldog’s Hayden Roddy for two fours and two sixes in one over. Sinaka and Dalila were then retired to give the other players a chance to get the remaining 21 runs. The Bulldogs immediately struck back with John Golding getting the prized wicket of Whitehall’s Raphael Cash for a duck, and Ian Lathrop taking out Whitehall big-hitter Jabari Penn also without scoring and Vinnie Floyd for 5. The Bulldogs bowlers continued making it difficult for Whitehall to score. Tom Allman and Tommy Reimer each got 1 wicket. But Whitehall’s captain Tyler Forcey kept the score going with his five runs. He also got help from Zechariah (3 runs), Adam Taifouri (3 runs), Isaiah Garland (1 run) and Andrew Yocom (2 runs). Kylie Spath did not give and took the wicket of Isaiah. But Whitehall 3 managed to surpass the required runs with one over to spare.

Whitehall 3 vs Kenilworth / Yorktown

Whitehall 3 batted first, and Keyshawn Thomas hit a boundary on the first ball of the game. He then added two more fours racing to 14 runs. Kenilworth’s Miles Magruder caused Keyshawn to lob one in the air, and Yorktown’s Benjamin Varghese made the difficult catch look easy. Two balls later Miles caused Whitehall’s Kwame Smith to send another catch to Benjamin, who obliged. Jakari Wright was up next to bat. Jakari hit the ball at will racing to 28 runs with 5 fours. He had to retire once he passed 25 runs. Tulip Grove’s Joyce Pomells, who plays for Kenilworth/Yorktown, got two quick wickets (outs) to keep down the runs. Paul Bifot scored 6 runs with 1 four, and Ethan Stubbs scored 10 with 1 four taking the total to 67 runs. Miles Magruder ended with 3 wickets (outs).

The Kenilworth/Yorktown top order batsmen had difficulty hitting against the Whitehall bowlers. Paul Bifot bowled some good deliveries. One in particular was so fast that the 3 coaches on the sidelines looked at each other in disbelief. Kenilworth’s Daniel Wade picked up the scoring by hitting a four. Benjamin Varghese livened up the fans by hitting 3 consecutive boundaries (4, 6, 4). Aaron Slack scored 6 runs with 1 four. Miles Magruder got in on the act and also hit a six taking his score 10 runs. Twin sister Kayla Magruder timed the ball well and hit it one bounce over the boundary for four runs. Kenilworth/Yorktown ended with a total of 51 runs losing by 16 runs. Whitehall bowlers Jasmine Kargbo and Keyshawn Thomas got one wicket (out) each.

Summer 2015: Two 11U and two 15U BBGC County Cricket Teams

To give more kids the opportunity to play against other clubs, we will have at least two 11U and two 15U BBGC County Cricket Teams. There will be no intramural tournament because kids summer vacation plans keep getting in the way of that. The start date for the summer program is Tuesday 16 June. We will take off the week of July 4th. Our last day will be Thursday 30 July with our Parents vs Kids matches. The kids that participate in the school cricket league can continue with cricket in the summer.

Fall 2014: Introduce Cricket to Elementary and Middle Schools

This fall I will be going back to the 7 elementary schools that participated in the Bowie Elementary School Teams (BEST) Cricket League to teach cricket to the 4th and 5th graders again (Heather Hills, Whitehall, Kenilworth, Yorktown, Grace Christian, St Pius, and Rockledge). I will also be going to the schools that we did not get to last year and start cricket there as well (e.g., Northview, High Bridge, Pointer Ridge, Holy Trinity, Tulip Grove, etc).

I will also start introducing cricket to the middle schools (Samuel Ogle, Benjamin Tasker, Grace Christian, St Pius, and Kenmoor). Since many of the 5th graders that participated in the BEST Cricket League last spring will now be at these schools, there is now a demand for middle school cricket.

So parents, I will need your help to get cricket started at the elementary schools that we missed and in the middle schools. Please talk to the PE teachers and have them send me an email if they would like to do cricket at your child’s school.

September 2014: Cricket Pitch at Rockledge

I am very close to having a real cricket pitch built at Rockledge Elementary School. This cricket pitch will be a concrete slab 74ft x 9ft covered with artificial turf. I have selected one contractor to lay the concrete slab and another to install the artificial turf (Albanes Landscaping, Inc). Both contractors have already been approved by PGCPS. I am hoping to have the cricket pitch built by the end of September. I will keep you informed on this.
